Malted grain, one major ingredient in brewing

Beer runs the gamut in color variety, from very pale and clear, to extremely dark and opaque. Don’t be fooled into letting the color predetermine what you think you know about the beer, or how it will taste and feel in your mouth. Beer color is based primarily on the types of malted grain that are used in brewing, in addition to many other factors like the length of the mash, length of the wort boil, and all other stages in the brewing process.

At Prost, our German style biers have a distinctive color and appearance for each style. The types of malts most commonly used to make German style bier are Vienna, Munich, Crystal, Pilsner, and wheat, among others. Each style’s recipe calls for one or more of these different malts, which have a great impact on the bier’s taste and color. Often biers darker in color, like our Dunkel or Doppelbock, have been brewed using a greater amount of malts like Munich or Crystal which are richer in color and flavor. Once again, don’t be fooled by the color, as our biers lighter in color like Pils and Kölsch are also loaded with flavor.

Malt is a very important ingredient in our German style biers, but don’t forget the others. The bier’s taste will also be impacted by the water we use, the varieties of noble hops in each recipe, the yeast that ferments, and every other aspect of our brewing process.
