In the last blog, we told the tale of how the Prost team discovered the rare German specialty Altfränkisches Dunkel Bier that has been a part of the Prost Brewing German beer lineup since the beginning. This rare gem was unveiled to the Prost Brewing team in a Franconian brewery that ended up selling their antique, copper plated kettle to Prost.
So where is Franconia, Germany and why did the Prost Brewing team choose this area of Germany to search for their authentic German brewery? Franconia (or “Franken” in German) is nestled in the northern part of Bavaria. While Franconia is not considered an official state of Germany, its residents consider themselves separate from Bavarians.
Franconia is home to a startling diversity of beer, and is considered to be one of the most diverse brewing regions in Germany. Old breweries are commonplace in this region, acting as essential centerpieces to every small village and town in the area.
Staying true to their roots, many of these centuries old breweries operate as they always have, producing their own unique style of beer solely for their own village’s consumption and pleasure. Together these little breweries produce an alarming amount of beer, supplying more than 25% of all of the beer produced and consumed in Germany, all from this one region. It is no wonder that Franconia is widely known as Germany’s brewing heartland!
So when Prost Brewing’s team went in search of their authentic German brewery, they decided to go straight to the heart of Germany’s brewing traditions.
